تعد هذه السيرة قصة حياة وليست دراسة عامة لمجموعة أعمال، وهي موجهة للقراء كافة ممن قد تستهويهم موسيقى بيتهوفن وليس لديهم بالضرورة معرفة بالنظرية الموسيقية. فليهنأ بال هؤلاء القراء وليطمئنوا إلى أن بيتهوفن لم يشعر قط أنه كان يؤلف الموسيقى لموسيقيين آخرين، بل من أجل أفراد المجتمع البشري الذين اتخذهم "أصدقاء" freunde في الحركة الأخيرة من سيمفونيته التاسعة.
ومع ذلك فلا يمكن التعبير عن عظمة موسيقى بيتهوفن بصورة كاملة دون بعض التحليل والإشارة للأمور الفنية. وقد فعلنا هذا بلغة بسيطة كلما أمكن ذلك، ومن يرغب في المزيد من التوضيح فعليه الرجوع إلى مسرد المصطلحات الموسيقية في نهاية الكتاب.
وقد عبر عن القيم النقدية بصفة عامة بالفلورينات الفضية، وهي العملة الأساسية في عصر بيتهوفن. ومع أن هذه العملة انخفضت قيمتها أثناء الحروب النابليونية وحلت محلها العملات الورقية لعدة سنوات، فإنه يمكن افتراض أن هناك علاقة ثابتة بينها وبين عملة الدوقية (التي تساوي خمسة فلورينات) والجنيه البريطاني (المساوي عشرة فلورينات).
