كان العلم في أيام أرسطو يفتقر إلى التقدم التكنولوجي الذي نشاهده في العصور الحديثة، وجاءت فلسفة "بيكون" لتشهد بهذا النقص. فكل المسائل والأمور التي لم يستطع العلماء أن يكشفوا لها حلاً، وضعوا لها مبادئ في حدود الإمكان. فمثلاً التمييز بين الصورة والمادة، هو مخطط (رسم منطقي) صناعي، كذلك فإن استخدام أرسطو للقياس كوسيلة جديدة لترتيب الأفكار لا يعطينا تفسيراً لعمليات الطبيعة، والعلم التجريبي يجب أن يستخدم الاستقراء وأن يبدأ من الواقع ويظل وفياً للتجربة.
وبيكون يريد أن يعلم أن الإنسان، كيف ينظر إلى الطبيعة فالأشياء تظهر لنا أولاً في الضباب، وما نسميه في أغلب الأحيان "مبادئ" هو مجرد مخططات عملية تحجب عنا حقيقة الأشياء وعمقها.
ولا يكتفي بيكون بنقد أرسطو، بل هو ينقد الأخطاء الشائعة في العقل الإنساني عامة، والتي كثيراً ما وقفت حجر عثرة في سبيل البحث العلمي. ولقد أشار إلى هذه الأخطاء في كتابه العظيم "الأورجانون الجديد" الذي أراد أن يستبدل به أورجانون (منطق) أرسطو القديم. ولقد أطلق عليها اسم "الأوهام" وقسمها إلى أربعة أقسام هي: أوهام القبيلة، وأوهام الكهف، وأوهام السوق، وأوهام المسرح.
يقول بيكون: إن جميع المذاهب التي خضعت لها العقول كانت بمثابة تمثيليات، قام بإخراجها وتمثيلها الفلاسفة أنفسهم وكان الغرض منها، خلق عوالم خيالية، لا تصلح حقاً إلا للمسرح.
هذا العقل الذي يخضع للأوهام هو عقل واهم، ويجب أن نستبدل به العقل السليم والعقل تماماً. ولذلك وضع "بيكون" أصول منهج جديد هو "المنهج التجريبي الحديث" يقضي على جميع الأفكار الخاطئة، ويفسح المجال أمام البداهة واليقين. وطي هذا الكتاب دراسة لهذا الفيلسوف والتي عمد الباحث فيها إلى قراءة لما كتب عن بيكون ليركن فيما بعد إلى ما كتبه بيكون نفسه.
