إن أهم قاعدة يجب الانطلاق منها في كل دراسة لعلم الأطفال والنمو العضوي والوظائفي والفكري للطفل منذ الولادة وحتى البلوغ والنضج هي أن الطفل ليس بنسخة مصغرة عن الكبير، وإن ما نستطيع افتراضه في مجالات الطب الأخرى لا يجد الأرض الصالحة لتطبيقه في عالم الأطفال فمنذ اللحظة الأولى لتلقيح البويضة وأخذها موضعها في الرحم يتأثر الجنين بعوامل عديدة أهما "عنصر الوراثة" بالإضافة إلى عوامل خارجية تلعب بعض الدور في نمو الطفل الجسدي والفعلي والوظائفي، وبما أنه من المستحيل التحكم بالعناصر الداخلية (أي علم الوراثة)، فإنه من الممكن أن نحاول التأثير على العناصر الخارجية، وذلك من خلال معرفتنا العلمية بتركيب جسم الطفل ومراحل نموه.
وأسئلة تتكرر كل يوم وعلى لسان أكثر الأمهات: لماذا طفلي ضعيف البنية أو قصير القامة، أو قليل المناعة وذلك بعكس شقيقه أو ابن الجيران والأصدقاء... لماذا تأخر في المشي أو الكلام... لماذا هو عصبي المزاج... إلى آخر هذه التساؤلات التي لا حدّ لها، ولا جواب محدد أو مقنع لها، بل ما يمكن قوله هو أنه ومنذ تكوين الجنين تتكون معه الخواص والمزايا والقدرات والبينة والجنس، والتي لا يمكن تغييرها أو التأثير عليها، إلا أن للأم دوراً هاماً تلعبه من خلال خلقها لطفلها الأجواء الصحية والصحيحة لنموه الجسدي والنفسي.
لهذا يترك المؤلف البحث في علم الوراثة جانباً، مختصراً في بحثه المقدم في هذا الكتاب، بالتركيز على دور الأم خلال الحمل، وعلى دور الوالدين منذ الولادة وحتى البلوغ في العمل على تربية الطفل الجسدية والفكرية، بالإضافة إلى دور بقية العناصر الخارجية من بيئة وعائلة ومجتمع ومدرسة وطبيب.
