كانت عفّت الثنيان، زوجة الملك الراحل فيصل بن عبد العزيز آل سعود (حكم 1964- 1975) ركيزةً أساسيّة لأسرة آل سعود الحاكمة، وُلدت الملكة عفّت وترعرعت في إسطنبول لعائلةٍ ذات جذورٍ سعوديّة، وعادت إلى المملكة عام 1932، أي قبل أشهرٍ قليلة من قيام الحاكم المؤسس عبد العزيز بن عبد الرحمن بإعادة تأسيس النظام الملكي.
استخدمت عفّت تأثيرها لغرس العديد من الأفكار التقدّميّة في المملكة، بما في ذلك خطوات هائلة في تعليم الفتيان والفتيات، فضلاً عن تحقيق إنجازاتٍ رئيسية في مجال الرعاية الصحيّة.
تميّزت المملكة عفّت بنظرةٍ ثاقبة، وكانت امرأة فاعلة بإمتياز، تركت بصمتها في تاريخ آل سعود المعاصر، إذ قامت بحماية أقاربها وتمكينهم، ربّت عائلة مذهلة، فأصغت بعناية، ووجّهت النقاشات بأسلوب هادئ كلّما كان ذلك ضرورياً، وقدّمت في بعض الأحيان المشورة السياسيّة لشريك حياتها ولإخوته الذين تعاقبوا على الحكم بعد إغتياله.
اتّسمت الملكة عفّت بوعيٍ سياسي، ولهذا أدّت دوراً ريادياً في المجتمع النسائي السعودي، وقامت بالعديد من المهمات على مستوى الدولة، واستضافت نسوة قائدات من ضيوف المملكة، سافرت كثيراً، وجالت في أنحاء أوروبا والولايات المتحدة خصوصاً، ودعمت عدداً لا يستهان به من المؤسسات الخيرية، وأقنعت كثيرين بالإستثمار في المملكة، حظيت بإحترامٍ على مستوى العالم، والتمس نصحها وإرشادها، عدد كبير من الناس الذين شاركتهم طموحاتها وأفكارها بما فيه خير البلاد.
