يقول هنري ميشو (Henri Michaux) بطريقة واضحة وضوح الشمس، إن تحديد الأعداء والأصدقاء والتحقق منهم يشكل آلية ضرورية قبل شن الحرب، وعند انتهاء النزاع يحتسب المتنازعن الحصيلة السلبية ذاتها: لقد كانت الحرب أسوأ الحلول لكن الناس خضعوا لها، مرة أخرى، ومن المنطقي أن نحاول فهم كيفية إنتاج العجرفة الحربية التي تدفع الناس إلى أن يقتل بعضهم بعضاً بطريقة شرعية.
ذلك أن الحرب هي، قبل كلّ شيء، ترخيص ممنوع شرعياً لقتل أناس لا نعرفهم (وأحياناً نعرفهم حق معرفة على غرار الحروب الأهلية) لكنهم يتحولون فجأة إلى طرائد يجب تعقبها والقضاء عليها. إن الحرب هي اللحظة "غير الطبيعية"؛ إذ يمكن معاقبة من يرفض قتل العدو بالموت، لذا يتعين علينا القيام بذلك عن طيب خاطر والاقتناع بما نفعل.
لا يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تحديد طريقة مقبولة أو غير مقبولة للقتل، لكنه يرنو إلى تحليل كيفية نشوء علاقة العداوة، وكيف يبنى المتخيّل قبل الذهاب إلى الحرب. وقبل دراسة أشكال العنف، مهما كانت، فإن ما يهمنا هو الطريقة التي تجعل العنف شرعياً ومقبولاً؛ إذ في الدول الديمقراطية يجب على الحرب أن تكون "ديمقراطية".
