-ولد في 31 يناير 1923.
في "لونج برناش" بـ "نيوجيرسي"، وترعرع في بروكلن بـ "نيويورك"، وتخرج في جامعة هارفارد، وفي عام 1948 نشر روايته الأولى "عارٍ وميت" التي حققت له شهرته.
-أحد أكثر الكتاب الأمريكيين شهرة وإثارة للجدل في المشهد الأدبي الأمريكي المعاصر.
-كتب في كل الأجناس الأدبية، بل اخترع طرقاً جديدة في السرد..
كتب الرواية والمسرح والشعر وسيناريوهات الأفلام التي أخرج بعضها ومثَّل في بضعها الآخر،كما كتب المقالة والكتاب السياسي والفكري حيث إنه كان أحد القيادات في حركة الشباب الهيبي بمدينة نيويورك.
-من أهم أعماله "أغنية الجلاد"، و"عارٍ وميت"، و"ليالي عنيفة"، و"جيوش الظلام"، و"حكاية أوزوالد".
-حاز على أغلب الجوائز الأدبية الكبرى عدا "نوبل للآداب" إلا أن شهرته وأهميته ككاتب كانت تتجاوز الجوائر بكثير حتى إنه صار ثاني اثنين -مع "إدجار ألن بو"- بحيث لا يتم تناول الأدب الأمريكي المعاصر دون تناول أعمالهما.
-له 47 كتاب منهم 13 رواية.
-توفيَّ 10 نوفمبر 2007، عن عمر 84 عاماً.
