هدفي من هذا الكتاب ان اقدم معظم الأشكال القصصية التى عرفها التراث العربي في كتاب واحد يضمها فيعطى صورة متكاملة لجانب من جوانب النشاط الإنساني والفكري عند العرب. فالمكتبة العربية مليئة اليوم بالمراجع عن القصة عند العرب، لكن كلا منها لا يولى اهتمامه إلا نوعا قصصيا واحدا أو بعض الانواع القصصية دون البعض الآخر، ولا شك ان هذه المؤلفات قد أعانتني إلى حد كبير فيما كتبته من فصول هذا الكتاب، فأنا لم أبدأ من الصفر، بل إنني أعترف أنه لولا هذه المؤلفات لما أمكن أن يظهر مثل هذا الكتاب، فهو مرحلة تالية لمؤلفات اخرى مهدت له طريق، ولكن تقديم دراسات متجاورة لمختلف الأشكال القصصية التى عرفها التراث العربي يقدم صورة بانورامية ويهب لهذه الاشكال حياة جديدة تختلف كل الاختلاف عن تقديمها منفصلة.
