أولاد عائلة سبعة ولدوا في بغداد، وترعرعوا بالقرب من نهر دجلة، وتوزع وقتهم بين النشأة الصارمة في البيت وعند "الملآ" وفي المدرسة النظامية، وبين اللعب في الطرق والأزقة فيما وسائل لهوهم حصى الشواطئ وخرق الشوارع وصندوق العجائب.
لم ينعموا طويلاً بحنان أمهم التي قضت الكهرباء عليها فجأة في دارها وهي بعمر 39 عاماً. وبقي الأب دون زواج ثان حرصاً على راحة أولاده، مضحياً هو براحته حتى وفاته بعد أقل من 6 سنوات من قدر زوجته، وكان بعمر 55 عاماً. وخلال تلك الفترة كان الأورد منشطرين، الصغار عند والدهم، فيما الكبار عند خالهم. وبعد وفاة الوالد تجمع الأولاد السبعة مرة أخرى تحت سقف واحد، ليهب الأخ الأكبر بدور الأب، ولتنهض الأخت الكبرى بدور الأم، ورعياً سويا الآخرين بكل صبر وعناية، حتى توفق الجميع بمستقبل جيد.
في هذا الكتاب سجل أحد الأولاد السبعة مسيرة حياته أيام الطفولة والصبا، في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، بتقاليدها وجمالها وطرافتها، بجسرها الخشبي العائم والترامواي "الكاري" في النهار، وصفير "الجرخجية" ونقارة "المسحرجية" في الليل، والمناداة في الأزقة والشوارع لمن فقد صبياً أو حيواناً، أو لترويج مهنة تنتظرها ربات البيوت، مروراً بمشاركته الوالدة في أشغالها البيتية، الطريفة منها والمضنية، ومرافقة الوالد في سفراته المثيرة ليلاً في المناطق القروية والريفية.
كل ذلك، إلى جانب مئات الأحدات والمشاهدات والمفارقات، دونها بأسلوب يجمع بين تثبيت تاريخ تلك الحقبة والعرض القصصي الطريف، مستخدماً مفردات اللهجة العامية حيث تقضي الضرورة للحفاظ على الرواية روحاً ومضموناً.
ذلك الابن هو الدكتور فخري قدوري.
