يضطلع الإعلام في عصرنا الراهن بمهام على مستوى كبير من الأهمية بالنسبة للمجتمعات الإنسانية، تتجاوز المهمة التقليدية التي أنيطت به سابقاً، والمرتبطة بنقل المعلومة والتأثير على الرأي العام، إلى الانغراس في جوانب المجتمع المختلفة، لإعادة خلق هذا المجتمع بالشكل الذي يراه مهندسو الإعلام، عبر بوابة صياغة الرؤية والموقف والسلوك والعادات، وبالتالي القيم، وما يصاحب ذلك من تشويه في مجال ما من الصورة وتجميل في مجال آخر، وإضفاء مميزات في الشيء ليست من طبيعته، وخاصة في فترات الصراعات والأزمات.
ويبدو هنا أن الإعلام الصهيوني من النماذج البارزة التي تقدم كمثال على مهمة التشويه والتزوير والافتراء والخداع والتضليل، التي ينطوي عليها جوهر العملية الدعائية في الكيان الصهيوني، والتشكل استمراراً للعدوان على العرب والفلسطينيين.
ومن هنا ليس غريباً أن يبدو العرب في وسائل الدعاية الصهيونية في صورة الإرهابي، القاتل، عدو الحضارة، المخادع... إلى آخر هذه الأوصاف التي يعج بها القاموس الدعائي الصهيوني، وهي أوصاف تخضع في إطلاقها لمصلحة الكيان الصهيوني ولاستراتيجيته العدوانية.
وقد بلغت صورة العربي في الوسائل الدعائية الصهيونية خلال الانتفاضة الفلسطينية، في درجة التعميم، حداً لم يسبق أن ظهرت فيه، وإن أطفال المدارس الفلسطينيين إرهابيون يحملون المتفجرات في حقائبهم المدرسية، كما عقب العديد من المسؤولين الصهاينة إثر استشهاد خمسة أطفال في مدينة غزة بواسطة عبوة زرعتها قوات الاحتلال وهم ذاهبون إلى مدارسهم، وإن بيوت مخيم جنين مصانع للإرهاب والإرهابيين، ومشاغل الحدادة والدكاكين في غزة ورشات لوسائل الإرهاب الفلسطيني، وذلك لتبرير البطش الصهيوني، ما حدا بالدكتور إدوار سعيد إلى القول: "إن الخطوة الأولى في عملية تجريد الآخر المكروه من صفاته الإنسانية يتمثل في اختزال وجوده إلى بضع عبارات وصور بسيطة تتكرر بإلحاح، وهذا ما يجعل أسهل بكثير أن يقصف العدو من دون وخز ضمير".
