إننى كلما تناولت ديوانا من دواوين "محمود أبو الوفا" صاحب "الأشواق" عجبت لهذا الرجل الذى لم يقرأ لأولئك الذين يسمونهم أرباب الشعر الأوروبيين كيف اهتدى إلى هذا اللون وإلى هذه الحدة كلها فى شعره ودواوين شعره. دعك من ظاهر الكتاب, واضرب ما شئت فى باطنه فإنك واجد شيئا أرجو ان يلتفت إليه القراء والنقاد جميعا, هو ان هذا الشاعر العربى يعطيك قصائد جديدة فيها موضوع, ولهذا الموضوع وحدة لاتكاد تستطيع أن تنزل عن بيت من بيوت القصيدة لئلا تتفكك هذه الوحدة, شأن الشعر والشعراء فى حياة اوروبا الحديثة.
ومع هذا فلمحمود أبو الوفا روح مصرية ظاهرة, وقد يعمد الشعراء إلى تناول موضوعات محلية فى شعرهم ليعرفوا بمصريتهم. أما شاعرنا هذا فتعرفه بمصريته فى روحه وألفاظه وتعبيره عن خلجات نفسه وأفكاره.
