يعتبر التفكيرالإبتكاري او الإبداعي جزءاً هاماً من واجبات الأفراد, قادة وموظفين بل ان بعض الكتاب يرون ان القدرات الإبداعية يجب ان تكون في المستقبل هي البند الاول في التوصيف الوظيفي لوظيفة مدير.

وقد يظن البعض ان الابتكار ينصرف الي المعدات او المواد والسلع فقط, او يقتصصر علي مجال العلوم الطبيعية والهندسية, ولكن الإبتكار يمتد لجميع حقول المعرفة والانشطة الإنسانية, وإن لم يصل إلي نفس الدرجة التي حققها في العلوم السابقة.
وأمام المدير مجال فسيح للإبداع فتطبيق نظرية جديدة للإدارة في إدارته مثلاً يعد إبتكاراً والتوصل الي سياسة تحقق ولاء العاملين مثلاً, او إنخفاض نسبة الغياب او زيادة تعاون الافراد مع بعضهم او تخفيض تكاليف الانتاج كل هذه أنواع من الابتكار والتجديد.
