تنقسم الأفعال المتعدية إلى قسمين: قسم يتعدى مباشرة إلى اسم يقع عليه ويتخذه مفعولاً به، وقسم يتعدى بواسطة حرف الجر وهو موضوع معجمنا..
ولا يخفى على القارئ أن تبدّل معنى الفعل بتبدل حرف التعدي، نحو
"رَغِبَ فيه، أي اهتم به وأحاطه بعنايته".
"رَغب عنه، أي انصرف عنه ولم يحفل به".
ثم هناك أفعال لا تكتفي في تعديتها بحرف واحد وإنما تحتاج إلى حرفين، نحو:
"أم بالناس إلى الصلاة".
وإذا كنا قد أتينا على ذكر هذه الأفعال متعدية، فهذا لا يعني أن قسماً منها لا تأتي تعديته مباشرة كأجال بصره وأجال ببصره، أي نقله، وإنما غايتنا أنه إذا شئنا تعديتها تكون بهذا الحرف أو ذاك.
