في عام 1871م انتفضت باريس ضد نابليون الثالث والرجعية الفرنسية، واستولى الثوار على السلطة وأقاموا حكومة الكومونة، وخلال الشهرين اللذين استمرت فيهما، أحرت العديد من الإصلاحات أهمها في مجال التربية والتعليم وتم فصل الدولة عن الدين، وإلغاء العمل الليلي، ومنع الغرامات والضرائب المفروضة على أجور العمال، وتشغيل المصانع المعطلة، لكن الرجعية لم تستسلم وعبأت جيشاً هاجم باريس فلجأ الثوار إلى المتاريس، وتم قمع الثورة بشكل دموي.
