منذ أن استقرت الخطوط على أنواع معروفة انصرف الخطاطون لتجويدها والإرتقاء بها، وبدأت حالة التباري بينهم بنمط خط الأسطر على هيئة لوحات ومرقعات ومخطوطات تضمنت الآية الكريمة والحديث الشريف أو الحكمة الجليلة أو القول المأثور وجذبت الحالة تلك انتباه الخلفاء والأمراء والوزراء وعليّة القوم وأثرياء الناس قديماً فاقتنوا الأعمال المتميزة وزينوا بها دورهم وقصورهم وأغدقوا المكافآت على مجوديها؛ فكانت عوامل دفع وتطوير في السعي إلى الجودة وإيجاد أشكال فنية متنوعة وعلى هيئات متعددة كالمستطيل والمربع أو الدائرة أو المثلث وأحيطت بزخارف جميلة.
في كتابه "سر الحروف وسحر التكوين" لا يتوقف الكاتب الفنان باسم ذنون عند نشوء علم الخط وتطوره وأنواعه وعباقرته ومجوديه، وأماكن انتشاره، بل يذهب باتجاه البحث عن أسراره والكشف عن الجانب التشكيلي والإبتكاري فيه، بالإضافة إلى عرض لأعمال إبداعية لأكثر من فنان فانسجمت كما يقول المؤلف "فانسجمت موضوعاتي معهم ومع إنجازاتهم الإبداعية التي تمتلك نبض التجدد وروح الإبتكار فجاءت الموضوعات مبتكرة غير مسبوقة في بعضها والبعض الآخر تناولته من زاوية حديثة فكانت الموضوعات جدية إجتهادية تجديدية يلفها الصدق والإخلاص، فاجتمعت لي مجموعة مستطابة منها أضعها بين يدي القارئ الكريم ..."
توزع الكتاب على خمسة فصول جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: الفصل الأول: الألفباء والأبجدية النقطة في فن الخط، الفصل الثاني: أشهر الخطوط لأشهر الخطاطين ومنهم: أحمد كامل، محمد شوقي، عماد الحسني ... وآخرون، الفصل الثالث: الأشكال الفنية في الخط ، معارض فن الخط، الفصل الرابع: لفظ الجلالة الحركة في ألفباء فن الخط الخطاط ومضامينه التعبيرية، الفصل الخامس: الإئتلاف بين الخط والخطاطين.
