في صبيحة يوم من أواخر العام 2007 استيقظ العالم على خبر هز الأوساط العلمية ومثل تحديًا قاسيًا لكبرياء الإنسان وغروره، فقد اكتشف اثنان من العلماء اليابانيين أن قردة الشمبانزي تتفوق على البشر في واحد من اختبارات الذاكرة.
في هذا الاختبار تم تدريب الشمبانزي على تبين وحفظ الأرقام العربية من 1 إلى 9، ثم بعد ذلك أجريت مسابقة تنافس فيها ستة من قردة الشمبانزي ضد طالبات جامعيات، وكانت المسابقة تتضمن عرضًا للأرقام على شاشة اليكترونية، ثم بعد برهة من إظهار الأرقام مبعثرة بغير ترتيب على الشاشة كان يتم إخفاؤها بواسطة مربعات بيضاء تظهر مكانها، ثم يطلب من المتسابق أن يشير بإصبعه إلى أماكن الأرقام حسب ترتيبها من الأصغر إلى الأكبر، فكانت المفاجأة المدوية أن إجابات الشمبانزي جاءت أدق وأسرع كثيرًا من إجابات البشر.
