ظلت فكرة "المدينة الفاضلة" حلما من احلام المفكرين على مر العصور، يستشررقون من خلالها عالما اقرب إلى الكمال، و اختطوا لها موقعا عبقريا وزمانا لا يعرف الحدود. وهى "المدينة" لا تعرف الاحزان ساحتها، فهى اشبه ما تكون "بالفردوس الارضى". وقد تخيل البعض تكلم "المدينه" فى حديقة غناء، وتصورها آخرون فى جزيرة نائية فيما وراء البحار، فى حين ان فريقا ثالثا تخيلوها تحت سطح الأرض. و إذا كانت "المدينة الفاضلة" التى داعبت احلام هؤلاء المفكرين تنفرد بعبقرية المكان وتشتر به الزمان، فإن اهل تلك المدينة ايضا ينبغى ان يكونوا من شريحة مميزة للبشر؛ فهم يتلقون تربية مثالية ونموا جسديا وعقليا على افضل حال، اشبه ما يكونون "بالسوبرمان" superman، ولكأنهم قوم "معقمون طبياً". على ان هذه "المدينة" لا تدعى خلودا لاهلها ، و إنما تنشر العيش الطيب للجميع من المهد إلى اللحد، فهم شركاء فى السراء دوماً؛ لانه ليس ثمة ضراء تطرق على بواباتهم ابدا. من جانب آخر يرى بعض النقاد فى اصحاب فكر "المدينة الفاضلة" نمطاً من العصابيين الذن ضاقوا بحاضرهم، فأخذوا يهربون بخيالهم الجامح إلى عوالم الخيال و الاساطير، تماما كما فعل صاحبنا "دون كيخوته" بطل الاديب الاسبانى سرفانتيس فى مغامراته التى تثير الاسى لحال العالم والإشفاق على البطل الحالم!.
