يسعى الفرد للتفوق ما وسعه ذلك والتفوق الدراسي يعد مدخلاً لإثبات الذات وكسب احترام الآخرين وتقديرهم. لكن هذا لا يكون إلا بتوفر صحة نفسية، إذ أن تحقيق أهداف الفرد ممكنة في حدود إمكاناته وقدراته فقط. ومن هنا فقد خطي موضوع الصحة النفسية والتفوق الدراسي باهتمام بالغ من لدن علماء النفس والتربية.
وقد بذل المؤلف جهداً كبيراً في هذا البحث الذي بين يدينا والذي يسلط فيه الضوء على الموضوع المشار إليه، ولقد تناول في الباب الأول العصابية موضحاً أنها بعد أساسي من أبعاد الشخصية يتميز بالشيوع لينتقل إلى بحث المكلات والنبذ كما يعتبر مفتاحاً لحل الصراع بين الألفة والعزلة ويذيب الفروق بين الناس. ويعد التوافق أحد مقاييس الصحة النفسية فالشخص الذي يتوافق جيداً لمواقف البيئة ممتلكاً لصحة نفسية جيدة أما التفوق الدراسي فإن عدم الاتفاق على تعريف واحد له يعكس حيرة المتخصص في المجالات التربوية والتعليمية حيث يعرفه البعض على أساس نسبة الذكاء بينما يعرفه البعض الآخر على أساس التحصيل أو الإنجاز إذ ترتبط مفاهيم كثيرة بالتفوق الدراسي ولا بد من مراعاتها عند تعريفه.
أما الباب الثاني من الكتاب فقد خصصه الباحث لدراسة الفروق بين طلاب الجامعة المتفوقين وغير المتفوقين دراسياً في العصابية والمشكلات العاطفية والتوافق النفسي والاجتماعي وقد اشتقت هذه الدراسة أصولها ومبرراتها من المبادئ التي أرستها الصحة النفسية في المجالات التطبيقية والتربوية.
