يتناول الكتاب خصائص الحروف العربية ومعانيها من خلال دراسة يحاول فيها المؤلف الكشف عن مظاهر الإعجاز اللغوي في بنية العربية، على ضوء ما حصل له عن تطورها عبر المراحل (الغابية، فالزراعية، فالروعية)، والتي مر بها العربي في جزيرته الأم فأبدع خلالها تباعاً الحروف (الهجائية، فالإيمائية، فالإيجابية) بما يتوافق مع تطوره المعيشي والذهني. وقد حافظ على خصائص ومعاني كل فئة منها في مفرداته وقواعد صرفه ونحوه. فكل حرف عربي له خصائصه ومعانيه، ومعنى كل مفردة هو بعامة محصلة خصاص ومعاني أحرفها. ويرى المؤلف إن دراسته هذه تمهد للانتقال بالعربية من مرحلتها التراثية التي دامت ألف عام ونيف… كيف استعمل العربي مفرداته وقواعد صرفه ونحوه إلى مرحلة حديثة هي: لماذا استعملها العربي هكذا.
