والكتاب المترجم الذي بين أيدينا لا يزال-على الرغم من تقادم العهد عليه-من خير الكتب في موضوعه، وأنسبها للمبتدئين في هذه الصناعة. وهو يمتاز في هذا المجال بطابعه التعليمي، إذ يبدأ بأوليات علم الصوت ومبادئه البسيطة، ثم يتدرج بالقارئ من السهل إلى الصعب، من البسيط إلى المعقد، ممهداً بذلك الطريق إلى فهم المطياف ووظائفه وكيفية قراءة ما يمدنا به هذا الجهاز من رسوم، حتى ينتهي بقارئه إلى فهم أمثل لمسائل فيزياء الصوت بإطلاق، وفيزياء الصوت اللغوي خاصة، ثم لمشكلات التحليل الطيفي للكلام على نحو أخصّ، ولعل لخبرة كاتبه "إرنست بولجرام" في تدريس التحليل الطيفي بجامعات أميركا وإيطاليا صلة بهذه الصبغة التعليمية التي تقوم على التدرج في إيراد المعلومات، وسهولة العرض، وضرب الأمثلة الموضحة، ودقة اختيار الرسوم والأشكال المعبرة عن الأفكار.
