يتناول هذا الكتاب النمو العقلي في علاقته بالتطور المعرفي، وذلك من وجهة النظر التكوينية التي تبناها بياجي. وإذا ما بدا هذا الكتاب للنظرة الأولى إليه من حيث موضوعه كتاباً في علم النفس، فإننا لا ننكر هذا حيث يؤخذ هذا الموضوع منعزلاً، غير أننا نريد أن نلمح إلى أن هذا الكتاب إذا يتناول وجهة النظر التكوينية، فيطلق في الوقت ذاته نفس منطلقاتها، يرتبط علم النفس بالابستمولوجيا لدى بياحي بروابط وثيقة تظهر في وجه من وجوهها في استناد الابستمولوجيا إلى علم النفس من أجل دراسة موضوعها، وهو تكون المعارف دراسة علمية.
ومن جهة أخرى فإن الانطلاق من الأشكال العليا للمعارف إلى أشكالها الأولية، وهو ما يقتضي تراجعاً إلى الوراء لا يصل إلى غايته القصوى بفعل دراسات أخرى مثل تاريخ العلوم، فالباحث في هذا الباب لا يمكنه الرجوع إلا إلى الأشكال التي تحققت للمعرفة في الحضارات القديمة، وهي أشكال عليا لأن هناك أشكالاً أخرى أدنى منها لا تستطيع بلوغها لافتقادنا للوثائق الدالة عليها.
ولذلك ارتأى بياجي أنه بإمكاننا عن طريق دراسة النمو المعرفي عند الطفل من تعوض ذلك النقص لأن هناك نوعاً من التوازي بين النمو العقلي عند الطفل وبين التطور المعرفي على صعيد التكون الإنساني الشامل للمعرفة. ضمن هذا الإطار يأتي كتابنا الحالي الذي يدرس علاقة النمو العقلي بالتطور المعرفي ليكمل بحثنا عن الإبستمولوجية التكوينية بصفة عامة.
