الرسم من أقدم وسائل التعبير عند الإنسان. لقد عبّر عما كان يخالجه من إحساسات، معتمداً على رسومات حفرها على جدران الكهوف والمغارات التي كان يسكنها قديماً. رسم مجموعة من الحيوانات معبراً ربما عن خوفه منها. أو متمنياً قهرها والتغلب عليها. وكان هذا قبل أن ينطق بكلماته الأولى. ولما اكتشف اللغة وأصبحت وسيلته الأولى للتعبير والتواصل لم يتجرد الرسم من جاذبيته، ولم يفقد مكانته كوسيلة تعبير كذلك. والمثل القائل: "رسم واحد أفضل من ألف كلمة" لدليل على أهمية الرسم البالغة، والدور الرئيسي الذي يلعبه في حياتنا المعاصرة ونظراً للإقبال المتزايد من طرف الراغبين في تعلم القواعد الأولى، رأى "محمد سبيل" أن يساهم بوضع هذا العمل الذي بين أيدينا والذي يهدف منه إلى تعليم الراغبين قواعد الرسم الأولى. وفيه يتناول المؤلف الجانب التقني منطلقاً من بعض القواعد الأساسية، ومحاولاً تبسيطها لتكون في متناول كل مبتدئ يطمح لتعلم أبجدية الرسم. ولتقريب معاني بعض المصطلحات تجدون في آخر الكتاب ترجمتها إلى الفرنسية.
