مثلت الحرب الباردة واحدة من أهم النتائج التي ترتبت على صعود كل من الولايات المتحدة والإتحاد السوفيتي لقيادة العالم بعيد انتهاء الحرب العالمية الثانية؛ ففي هذه الحرب تناوب المعسكران الكبيران الصراع للسيطرة على مقدرات العالم وشعوبه بصورة غير مسبوقة؛ تجنب فيها كلا الفريقين الحرب الساخنة، لأنه في حال اندلاعها ستكون كفيلة بتدمير العالم، ومن هنا فقد كانت هذه الحرب الباردة بديلاً مقبولاً لـ"الحرب الساخنة".
وعلى الرغم من ذلك فقد كانت الحرب الباردة أكثر شمولاً واتساعاً، لأنها تجاوزت حدود الجغرافيا في الصراع العسكري المباشر إلى تدعيم كل طرف لدول وجماعات ضد مصالح الطرف الآخر في مختلف أنحاء العالم، بل إن نطاقها الجغرافي امتد إلى الفضاء الخارجي، فكانت حرباً على كل الجبهات، خاصة أنها كانت بمثابة صراع بين نظم أيديولوجية بصورة أوضح من أي حرب سابقة لها في التاريخ؛ فالحرب الباردة إذن كانت نتاجاً لصدام الثقافات والأيديولوجيات وتنامي لغة الرفض لكل من الآخر، ليس فقط بين السياسيين، وإنما انتشرت كذلك بين الشعوب.
وقد أخذ الجانب الإعلامي في تلك الحرب دوراً بارزاً، إذ حلت الدعايات الإعلامية محل الحرب الحقيقية، وكان المعسكران الكبيران متفقين ضمناً على أن التراشق بالكلمات أقل ضرراً من التراشق بالصواريخ النووية. فبعد أن كانت الدعاية سبباً في نشوب الحرب الساخنة في الماضي، فإن تلك الدعاية نفسها استغلت لتبرير هذا الإنفاق المهول على التسليح في كلا المعسكرين بدعوى الخوف من الآخر، فقد كان كل شئ مطروحاً ومباحاً في هذه المساجلات الفكرية، المهم ألا تحدث الحرب الساخنة.
