إن واحدة من المشكلات الرئيسية في حياة الصم والمكفوفين هى مشكلة الاتصال اللغوى الشفوية والكتابية، فقد تمثلت حلول تلك المشكلة بالنسبة للمكفوفين في طريقة برايل وآلات العمليات الحسابية وآلة الأبكس وتيلر، بينما تمثلت حلول تلك المشكلة بالنسبة للصم في طريقة لغة الشفاة ولغة الاشارة الاصابع. أما المشكلة الرئيسية الأخرى التى ازاحت الستار عنها الدراسة الكلينيكية المتعمقة للحالات الطرفية فقد أمدت على ان الاندماج المدرسي على عكس العزل يساهم في تكوين اتجاهات إيجابية للأطفال ( معقوين وعاديين) كل نحو الآخر، وإن مدارس ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة تفرض رؤية تشاؤمية لقدرات التلاميذ مما يعرض حظوظ نجاحهم للخطر وخلق حواجز نفسية تؤدي بدورها إلى غرس اتجاهات سلبية من قبل المعوقين تجاه العاديين.
