كان الخلفاء ومحبو العلم يُقبلون عليهم، ويُجزلون لهم العطاء، ويرغبونهم بشتّى الطرق لكي يستفيدوا منهم في الترجمة، وشرح الكتب العلمية التي يترجمونها، ووضع الإصطلاحات لها، ولم يكن إهتمام الخلفاء مقصوراً على الحكمة والفلسفة والعلوم العقلية فقط، بل كانوا يهتمون بالآداب والتاريخ والفقه والكلام وأيام العرب وأخبارها، فكانوا يعقدون المجالس العلمية ويُشاركون فيما يدور بها من العلوم والآداب والمعارف.
وخاصةً الخليفة المأمون - عالم بني العباس وحكيمها - فإنه كان يُشارك في علومٍ كثيرة، وله مجالس علمية يعقدها في قصره يُشارك فيها أجلِّ العلماء، ويحضرها الخليفة، ويُشارك فيما يدور بها من مباحث مختلفة، يجلس مع الجالسين كأحدهم بغير تمييز أو عناية، فيتكلم العلماء بكل حرية وصراحة فيما يبدو لهم.
روى طيفور عن يحيى بن أكثم قال: لما دخل المأمون بغداد، وقرَّ بها قراره، أمر أن يدخل عليه من الفقهاء والمتكلمين وأهل العلم جماعة يختارهم لمجالسته ومحادثته، وكان يقعد في صدر نهاره على لبود في الشتاء، وعلى حصير في الصيف، ليس معها شيء من سائر الفرش، وكان مجلس الفقهاء الذين اختارهم يحيى بن أكثم للمناظرة في حضرة المأمون يُعقد كل يوم ثلاثاء من كل أسبوع.
