يقول محمد حسنين هيكل من خلال تقديمه لهذا الكتاب "ملك النهاية"، وهكذا فإن "ملك النهاية" من أسرة "محمد علي" كان مطارداً بمأساة مطبقة بالحصار عليه من كل ناحية، ظروف التربية والتعليم والتجربة، وأحوال السياسة في الداخل، وقد أرخت له العنان في درجة الانفلات، وأثقال السياسة في الخارج وقد قيدت حركته إلى درجة الحصار، وزيادة عليه قصص الأم والزوجة، وكل هذه عناصر أدت بحاصل جمعها وبكيمياء تفاعلاتها إلى تركيب شخصية من أغرب ما عرفت قصور مصر، وكانت هذه الشخصية بالضرورة هي المركز الذي دارت من حوله الأحداث التي جرت في السنوات الأخيرة من العصر الملكي في مصر حتى انقضى زمنه في السادس وعشر دقائق بعد ظهر يوم السبت 26 يوليو 1952 حين أبحر اليخت (المحروسة) حاملاً "فاروق" إلى منفاه في إيطاليا كما اختار.
... والشاهد أن مذكرات "كريم ثابت" شهادة سياسية بالغة الأهمية، أو هي في الواقع شهادتان، كل منها ترسم صورة حية ناطقة متحركة كأنها شريط سينمائي.
الصورة الأولى: للرجل، الإنسان، الذي قدر له أن يكون آخر ملوك أسرة "محمد علي" وشخصيته المثيرة التي تجمع الآراء في تقبيحها. والصورة الثانية: للحياة السياسية في السنوات العشر الأخيرة من العصر الملكي في مصر قبل سقوطه في النهاية أمام ثورة 23 يوليو. وكان كريم ثابت في قلب الصورة الأولى، عاشها بنفسه على امتداد عشر سنوات. وكان أيضاً مشاهداً قريباً للصورة الثانية-رآها أمام عينيه طوال عشر سنوات...
وهكذا، فإنه يمكن القول أن "كريم ثابت" ترك كتابين، أحدهما عن "ملك النهاية" والثاني عن "نهاية الملكية"، ثم أن هذا هو الكتاب الأول "قصة" "ملك النهاية".
