يسلّط هذا الكتاب الضوء على العلاقة الجدلية التي تربط الأيديولوجيا بعلم الإجتماع، من خلال عرض نقدي يهدف إلى الكشف عن القوى الإجتماعية والسياسية التي أثّرت على مسار علم الإجتماع وتطوره، وكذا التيارات الفكرية والأيديولوجية التي تضرب بجذورها في بنائه ومرتكزاته.
منطلقاً في ذلك من مسلمة معرفية مؤداها: أن أي ضرب من ضروب الفكر ما هو إلا إنعكاس لمجموعة من الظروف الإجتماعية والقوى السياسية والإقتصادية المحيطة به، ولا يعني ذلك أن الواقع هو الذي يشكّل الفكر، ولكن يعني أن هناك علاقة جدلية بين الفكر والواقع، فالواقع يصوغ الفكر ويشكّله، ولكن الفكر أيضاً قد يسهم في تغيير الواقع.
ولهذا الكتاب أهمية علمية بالغة نظراً إلى راهنيته، فعلاقة الأيديولوجيا بعلم الإجتماع التي حظيت بإهتمام كبير من طرف علماء الإجتماع في الغرب، تحظى الآن بأهمية أعظم من طرف علماء الإجتماع العرب، الذين نجدهم في ظل العولمة الساعية إلى تحقيق الإكتساح الثقافي الغربي، يبحثون عن بديل إسلامي يتخذ من القرآن والسنّة إطاراً مرجعياً يقابل الإطار المرجعي العلماني لعلم الإجتماع كما نشأ وتطور في الغرب، كما تكمن الأهمية العلمية لهذا الكتاب في كشفه عن المضامين الأيديولوجية للنظرية السوسيولوجية.
