إن تقويم الأسنان علم معروف منذ القدم، فقد عرفه الفنيقيون وعالجوا به الأسنان وربطوها مع بعضها البعض، كذلك عرفه قدماء المصريين أيضاً.
وأول طبيب تقويم أسنان عربي هو أبو القاسم خلف بن عباس الزهراوي والمسمى - Albucasis - والذي عاش سنة 908- 1013م وكان قد لجأ إلى قلع بعض الأسنان المعوجة ولقد أُعترف بهذا التخصص منذ مائة عام وكان من أول الإختصاصات في طب الأسنان التي تم الإعتراف بها.
إن التطور السريع في عصرنا الحاضر من وعي صحي ومحافظة على الأسنان مما أدى إلى قلة قلع الأسنان في الفكين وهذا أدى إلى إزدحام في الأسنان وسوء إطباق بين الأسنان، وسوء الإطباق هذا إرتبط بشكل مباشر بتسوس الأسنان.
وهذا أيضاً يرتبط بشكل وثيق مع كونه علاجاً تجميلياً بل لحاجة وظيفية ضرورية للفظ الأحرف جيداً ومضغ الطعام أيضاً، لهذا يبادر الأهل بأخذ المشورة لعلاج أبنائهم من تشوهات الأسنان والحفاظ عليها وكذلك الحفاظ على اللثة والأنسجة الداعمة للأسنان.
إن هذا الكتيب قد وضع ليكون في متناول من هم بحاجة لمعرفة المزيد عن تقويم الأسنان والفكين بلغة مبسطة إما قبل العلاج أو خلاله أو بعده وكيفية المحافظة على أجهزة التقويم ونجاح العلاج.
كذلك أعد ليجيب عن كثير من الأسئلة التي تدور في مخيلة الوالدين وكذلك من هم بحاجة إلى علاج تقويم الأسنان، وليوضح أيضاً كيفية تركيب جهاز التقويم والخطوات المتبعة في العلاج، وأنواع علاج التقويم المتحرك والثابت.
