تعتبر هذه الدراسة متممة لدراستين سابقتين نشرت الدراسة الأولى في سلسلة "مصر النهضة" بعنوان مصر في كتابات الرحالة الفرنسيين في القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر" ونشرت الثانية في سلسلة "تاريخ المصريين" بعنوان مصر في كتابات الرحالة والقناصل الفرنسيين في القرن الثامن عشر"، تتناول هذه الدراسة "مصر في كتابات الرحالة الفرنسية في القرن التاسع عشر" من عام 1805 حتى عام 1879 أي منذ تولي محمد علي السلطة في البلاد وحتى نهاية عصر الخديوي إسماعيل عام 1879.
وتعرض الدراسة في فصولها التي بلغت الخمسة لمجموعة من الموضوعات سجلت من خلالها تاريخاً للوضع السياسي والاقتصادي الذي كان سائداً في تلك الفترة من الزمن، كما وعرضت للحياة الاجتماعية التي كانت سائدة وللطبقات الاجتماعية، وأبرزت تفاصيل هامة من الأعياد والاحتفالات التي كانت تقام في تلك الفترة ووصفت مدن مصر، ومدن البحر الأحمر، وقبل ذلك عرضت للعلاقات المصرية الفرنسية وللأسباب الكامنة خلف تزاد الاهتمام الفرنسي بمصر في عهد محمد علي (1805-1848) كما وعرفت بالرحالة الفرنسيين الذين زادوا مصر مؤكدة على أن هؤلاء لم يأتوا مصر مخلصين، بل قدموا لها في سياق علاقة متشعبة أصبحت تربط بين الأمتين الفرنسية والمصرية.
