يمثل هذا الكتاب مراجعة جديدة لمدرسة الحوليات الفرنسية وبأجيالها الثلاث، تلك المدرسة التي حاولت جاهدة أن تقدم معالجات جديدة لتاريخ الإنسان عبر كسر كل الأطر والمعالجات التقليدية المتعارف عليها في الأطروحات والإتجاهات التاريخية.
ولقد كان الشيء المهم والرئيس في إشتغالتهم المحدثة تلك هو تأثرهم الكبير بعلم الإنسان (الأنثروبولوجيا) ولا سيما بأطروحات الأنثروبولوجست ليفي شتراوس، مما جعل تلك المدرسة تحدث نقلة نوعية في العلوم الإنسانية لأنها في حقيقة الامر حطمت الجدران المعرفية بين التخصصات الإنسانية برمتها.
ومن وحي تلك المدرسة ظهر للوجود تخصص معرفي جديد إلا وهو الأنثروبولوجيا التاريخية، والتي تمثل في حقيقة الأمر أفقاً معرفياً يسهل لنا رصد الجذور والتحولات البطيئة التي تطال القضايا الثقافية والدينية فضلاً عن كونه يسهم في الكشف عن البناءات أو البنى الإجتماعية ذات الديمومة والتي تدخل ضمن ما أسماه الكثيرون من أبناء مدرسة الحوليات بــ (الأمد الطويل) والتي تمثل فيها الذهنيات أو العقليات المحور الرئيس الذي ما زال ينبض بالحياة.
وهي بذلك تستوعب قضايا كثيرة لا سيما بالنسبة للمجتمعات الشرقية على وجه الخصوص، والتي ما زال التاريخ بالنسبة لها وبكافة أشكاله يمثل مصدراً رئيساً لكافة الأنشطة والممارسات الأنية وخصوصاً الثقافية منها.
