يتناول هذا الكتاب مسألة مهمة في تاريخ الإسلام والمسلمين وهي مسألة الفتنة الكبرى وهي وجهة نظر جديدة في مسألة الفتنة الكبرى تتناسب وظروف العصر، فلعلنا نفهم ماضينا بصورة تسمح لنا لا بالإعجاب به -فنحن معجبون بالماضي إلى النخاع حتى أننا لا نستطيع أن نتجاوزه كما لو أن مستقبلنا لا يوجد إلا في ماضينا -وإنما بتفهمه وتفحصه للمضي قدماً في صنع التاريخ والمساهمة في بناء الحضارة الإنسانية مثلما ساهم الأوائل.
فقد انطلق البعض في دراسة هذه المسألة من مقتل عثمان وواصلها إلى مقتل علي وهو رأي فيه كثير من السداد ولكن هذا لا ينفي الرجوع بالمسألة إلى يوم السقيفة. فلا يمكن الكلام على الفتنة دون العودة بها إلى أصولها أي دون الانطلاق بها من يوم السقيفة.
هذا النزاع السلمي الذي وقع يوم السقيفة يبدو أنه سيؤسس إلى اختلافات وضغائن وأحقاد لن تموت ما دامت السلطة محل أطماع وتنازع. وليس أدل على ذلك من سعي الأنصار إلى اقتسام السلطة بصورة تناوبية أو بصورة هرمية، من المهاجرين الأمراء ومن الأنصار الوزراء.
وتتبع المؤلف أصداء السقيفة وما تبعها من تنازع وتخاصم وانفلات وانشقاق وانقلاب في المواقف من الحدث المؤسس للفتنى ومن المهد المولد لها إلى أن وصل بها إلى نهاية أحداثها المباشرة. وسعى من حيث إلى آخر إلى مراجعة مسائل تبدو في ذهن الناس من المسلمات مثل مسألة رفع المصاحف التي لم يتعرض لها أحد بالنقاش والتشكيك في عمومية المسألة ووقف منها موقف الباحث الأكاديمي.
ولعل دراسة الفتنة التاريخية قد تحولت في بعض الأحيان إلى فتنة باحثين وقراء لأنها من المواضيع التي تعيد إلى الوعي كثيراً من المشاعر والأفكار الكامنة في باطن النفوس ولأنها مسألة مركزية في تاريخ العرب والمسلمين. هل منها تولدت الإنقسامات التي ستحدث فيما بعد؟ هل هي المسؤولة عن الإنقسامات المعاصرة؟ هل حسم مسألة انتقال السلطة في سقيفة بني ساعدة كان هو السبب في تكدر الخواطر واندفان الضغائن؟
