في لقاء من لقاءاتي مع الأستاذ أحمد حسين الطماوي وهو خبير بتاريخ الثقافة المصرية عرفت للمرة الأولى اسم "حافظ نجيب"، وسمعت منه جانباً من قصته.
ومرت السنوات والاسم عالق بذاكرتي دون أن أتوقع أو حتى أتخيل اقتناء الرواية، ولكنني بمجرد اقتنائها قررت إعادة نشرها فكانت الكتاب الوحيد الذي نشرته على نفقتي الخاصة، وذلك عام 1996. وقبل ما يقارب من عام أخبرني صديق صحافي أن الممثل المعروف محمد صبحي يعدّ مسلسلاً تلفزيونياً "فارس بلا جواد" مأخوذ عن الرواية وآثرت الانتظار حتى تنشر معلومات كافية عن المسلسل، فإذا بالدنيا تنشغل انشغالاً هستيرياً بالعمل يصبح موضوع مطالبات وضغوط دولية من الكيان الصهيوني والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية تستهدف منع عرضه. ونفذت النسخ التي بقيت من الطبعة الأولى سريعاً فقررت إعادة نشره في دار "الانتشار العربي" لكشف السيرة الحقيقية للمغامر "حافظ نجيب".
وقد ترددت كثيراً في تحديد الشكل النهائي لهذا الكتاب وبخاصة أن به الكثير من الأحداث والشخصيات والتساؤلات التي تحتم وجود دراسة تساعد في إضاءة زوايا هذا العمل المثير، كما أن الراحل حافظ نجيب كتب مذكراته حتى عام 1909 وتوفي عام 1946 وبين هذين التاريخين كثيراً من الأحداث لم يدونها، وهي أحداث لا نريد أن يجهلها القارئ، وبخاصة أن بها مفاجآت لا تقل روعة عن مفاجآت الجزء الذي دوّنه حافظ نجيب نفسه.
