مؤلف هذا الكتاب محارب فيتنامي، قاتل في الحرب الفيتنامية الأولى ضد المستعمرين الفرنسيين، ثم خاض العديد من المعارك إبان الصراع ضد القوات الأميركية.
يروي كتابه هذا حكاية المقاتلين الفيتناميين في هجوم الربيع، الذي ساهمت فيه القوات المسلحة المدعومة بالجماهير، وحمل لفيتنام النصر الأخير، بعد خمسة وخمسين يوماً من المعارك الضارية المتواصلة. لقد كان هجوم الربيع عملية خاطفة.
وهو يمثل من هذه الناحية نموذجاً للحرب الشعبية الخاطفة التي تتميز عن الحرب الخاطفة التقليدية بقوة الزخم المعنوي الذي يحركها، واعتمادها على الضربتين العسكرية والسياسية وعلى التعاون الوثيق بين الهجوم العسكري العنيف على الجبهة والعمل الجماهيري على المؤخرات. ومن هنا تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب التاريخي الوثائقي، الذي يغطي حقبة هامة وغير معروفة تماماً من تاريخ النضال الفيتنامي.
