تعني إدارة المعرفة إيجاد بيئة داخل المنظمة تعمل على تسهيل توليد ونقل المعرفة والتشارك فيها. وبالتالي فإن التركيز يكون على إيجاد ثقافة منظمية ملائمة، وعلى إيجاد القيادة الفعالة. وتصبح المعرفة هامة جداً حينما يتعلق الأمر باكتساب الميزة التنافسية وإدامتها. وتعتقد بعض المنظمات أن إدارة المعرفة أمر له علاقة بمشروعات الأعمال الكبيرة فقط، وأن المنظمات الصغيرة، وبسبب من صغر حجمها، فإنها ليست بحاجة الى القيام بأي امر يتعلق بإدارة المعرفة. وللحقيقة فإن إدارة المعرفة لا تميز، بل وهي غير معنية بحجم المنظمة، إذ انها (ادارة المعرفة) هامة جداً لكافة مشروعات الأعمال بغض النظر عن حجمها أو عن القطاع الذي تعمل فيه.
