أجرى آلاف التجارب على الطلاب، وطور طريقة استخدام فيها الغدد اللعابية كنافذة يرقب من خلالها عمال الدماغ.
كرم بافلوف لإسهاماته العلمية، ومنح جائزة نوبل للفيزيولوجيا عام 1904. كان معاصراً للثورة الروسية والحرب الأهلية التي أعقبتها، وأقر لينين شخصياً بإنجازاته الهائلة، وأمن له الدعم المادى لإنجاز أبحاثه، وبنت الحكومة السوفياتية مجمعاً للبحث العلمي مخصصاً تحديدا لتجاربه العلمية.
