يشكل الضحك في حياة الإنسان عاملاً مهماً من عوامل تنمية شخصيته وانفتاحها على الحياة. كما أنه عامل من عوامل تجدد النشاط للانطلاق من جديد. والعرب بدورهم أدركوا أهمية الضحك فأدخلوه في أدبهم ليرسموا بفضله البسمة على ثغر الحزين. ويخلقوا في كتاباتهم التنوع الذي يعلي من قيمة الأدب وأهميته.
لذلك رأينا الناس يميلون نحو الأدب الضاحك، يتقبلونه بكل ارتياح، فيحفظون نوادره وطرائفه، يرددونها في الأوقات الحرجة من حياتهم، ويتذكرون معها أن الحياة لا تبتسم إلا في وجوه الباسمين، وتهرب من العابسين والمتجهمين.
وقد أردنا في هذا الكتاب أن نجمع طائفة من الطرائف والنوادر تنسي الإنسان للحظة همومه. وتعطيه بالتالي حافزاً جديداً للانطلاق. وقد حرص معد هذا الكتاب على جعلها مميزة بالذكاء والطرافة. وبعيدة عن التبذل والسفاهة، فجمعها مما هو شائع في الثقافة الشعبية، وهذبها ونقحها وجعل التنوع أساساً فيها إذ تناولت جوانب الحياة البشرية بمجملها.
