تأتي هذه الدراسة في تمهيد نظري وأربعة فصول، وكانت على النحو التالي: التمهيد: وهو عبارة عن مهاد نظري يتحدث عن تطور دراسة الأدب وتجدد وسائلها، وأثر ذلك في تطور الفن وإستمراريته. كما ويبحث في الظروف والنظريات التي أدت إلى تحولات على الساحة النقدية، والتي ساهمت في ظهور نظرية التلقي. ويبحث كذلك في علاقة هذه النظرية بالأصول الفلسفية الحديثة المتعلقة بجماليات التلقي، والمصادر الفكرية التي تأثرت بها.
ويتناول أيضاً الحديث عن أهمية هذه النظرية من حيث إحتفاؤها بالمتلقي وأفق توقعه لدى أبرز منظري التلقي: ياوس وإيزر، وعن آليات هذه النظرية، ومفاهيمها، والمفاهيم ذات العلاقة التي إستفادتها من النظريات النقدية الأخرى.
الفصل الأول: المتوقع واللامتوقع في جدلية الأنا والآخر، وهو مقاربة نصية لبعض نصوص الديوان، حيث تبرز صورة الأنا في حضور مكثف في الفضاء الشعري، لإستكناه جدل العلاقة بين الأنا والآخر في ضوء المتوقع واللامتوقع في شعر المتنبي.
ويقوم الفصل على مقدمة وثلاثة محاور، تتجلى فيها الأنا -في جدلها مع الآخر- بصور متعددة، منها: الأنا المتعالية، والأنا الصدامية، والأنا المتماهية.
الفصل الثاني: المتوقع واللامتوقع بين الواقع والمثال، ويبحث هذه الفصل في نزوع الشاعر -في سعيه وراء الكمال- إلى النموذج والمثال، والرغبة في تحقيقه من خلال تجسيد رؤاه الحلمية في (المثال) الذي يجرده في ذهنه ويصوره في شعره بصور مختلفة تخرج عن حدود المألوف والمتوقع.
وينتظم الفصل مقدمة وثلاثة محاور، يتجلى فيها المثال في صور متعددة: الإنسان النموذج في قيمه، والإنسان النموذج في سلوكه (الفعل)، والإنسان النموذج في أشيائه.
الفصل الثالث: المتوقع واللامتوقع بين الحقيقة والخيال، ويناقش هذا الفصل بعض صور التجاوز إلى ماهو غير متوقع في عالم الشاعر الذي يقيمه في الخيال مؤسساً على الرؤية الخاصة، في إطار جدلية العلاقة بين الحقيقة والخيال، وأثر ذلك في إحباط التوقع وتوليد الصدمة والإستجابة لدى المتلقي.
ويقوم الفصل على مقدمة وثلاثة محاور: الحقيقة الواقعية والخيال، والحقيقة المنطقية والخيال، والحقيقة المعرفية والخيال.
الفصل الرابع: المتوقع واللامتوقع في اللغة والسياق: ويهدف هذا الفصل إلى الوقوف على بعض ملامح الشعرية في لغة المتنبي التي هي نتاج عملية التشكيل، من خلال بعض الظواهر التعبيرية التي تعامل معها الشاعر لإنتاج تراكيبه المفاجئة وعباراته الغريبة، التي تهز عوامل التوقع وتستثير إستجابة المتلقي بما ينسجم مع الرؤية الشعرية والموقف الشعوري. ويناقش الفصل ثلاث ظواهر تعبيرية في لغة الشاعر: المفارقة، والمطالع، والتكرار.
