إن الوضع الطبيعي سيظل قائمًا، ويمكن فهمه أفقيًا على امتداد رقعة العالم العربي، دون التقيد بالحدود السياسية، لكن النمو البشري، والتطور الاقتصادي، والتغير الاجتماعي، قد تباينت جميعًا خلال القرن العشرين، بسبب التفاوت في مواقيت اكتشاف البترول واستغلاله، والاختلاف في مقادير إنتاجه وعائداته، وكان هذا وراء المعالجة الرأسية لجغرافية الوحدات السياسية في هذا الكتاب، كل على حدة. وحاولت جهدي أن أقيم نوعًا من التوازن في هذا العمل العلمي بين مختلف أقطار العرب، وبين كل من نواحي الدراسة الجغرافية الرئيسية، طبيعية وبشرية واقتصادية.
ولأنه في البيئة الجغرافية لا يمكن الوصول إلى فهم صحيح لما هو موجود فيها من ظواهر، إلا بالتعرف على ماضيها، ولهذا فإن دراستنا لمختلف الدول ستحوي نظرات في تاريخها الجغرافي، نوردها لا لذاتها وإنما لتأصيل المعرفة بالظواهر الحالية.
وإذا كان الجيولوجي يجد في الأرض عظمة وروعة، والأنثروبولوجي يرى في الإنسان قوة وقدرة، فإن الجغرافي يحس بهذه العظمة، وتلك القدرة في إطار التأثير المتبادل، والعلاقة المتينة بين الإنسان وأرضه.
