الكونت "ليف نيكولايافيتش تولستوي"، عملاق الأدب الروسي في القرن التاسع عشر، يعده البعض البعض من أعظم الروائيين على الإطلاق.
كان "ليو تولستوي" روائياً، ومصلحاً اجتماعياً، وداعية سلام، ومفكراً أخلاقياً، وعضواً مؤثراً في أسرة تولستوي؛ أشهر أعماله روايتا (الحرب والسلام)، و (آنا كارنينا)، وتتربعان على قمة الأدب الواقعي، فهاتان الرويتان تعطيان صورة واقعية للحياة الروسية في تلك الحقبة الزمنية.
أظهر تولستوي احتراماً خاصاً للأدب العربي، والثقافة العربية، فعرف الحكايات العربية منذ طفولته؛ عرف حكاية "علاء الدين والمصباح السحري"، وقرأ "ألف ليلة وليلة"، و "على بابا والأربعين حرامي"، وحكاية "قمر الزمان بن الملك شهرمان"، ولقد ذكر هاتين الحكايتين ضمن قائمة الحكايات التي تركت في نفسه أثراً كبيراً قبل أن يصبح عمره أربعة عشر عاماً؛ وهناك دليل آخر على احترام ليف تولستوي للتراث العربي؛ فيذكر الكاتب أنه أمضى إحدى الليالي في غرفة جدته، وأصغى إلى حكايات المحدث الأعمى "ليف ستيبا نفتش" الذي كان يعرف حكايات عربية كثيرة، يذكر أيضاً أنه راسل الإمام محمد عبده، وكانت بينهما محاورات مهمة.
