تؤرخ هذه الرواية فنياً لتجربة مر بها كثيرون من المصريين في الثلث الأخير من القرن العشرين، وهي تجربة ما أطلق عليه الرحلة إلى الشرق أو إلى الخليج، عبر عنها أكثر من أديب مصري، مقابل الرحلة إلى الغرب التي عبر عنها أدباء الجيل الأسبق، وهما رحلتان تثير المقارنة بينهما موضوعاً ثرياً وجديراً بالمناقشة أدبياً وحضارياً.
ويقدم لنا محمد غزلان تجربة بطله- ابتداء من اسمه عبد الحميد محمد سعد فكة- مشوبة بالسخرية ابتداء من اختيار هذا اللقب له فهو ("عبده ريال.... عبده فكة.... كلها فلوس")، وهي سخرية تكشف عن نفسها بدءاً من الإهداء (إلى الذين تعاملوا مع نماذج من أمثال: عبده ريال وعبده دينار وعبده دولار).
فقدم لنا نموذجاً لآلاف المصريين الذين عاشوا تجربة الغربة نحو الشرق بحلوها ومرها، وبينما كانت لرحلة الأسلاف إلى الغرب إيجابياتها، فإن روايتنا تعلن أن رحلة الأبناء إلى الشرق كان لها انعكاساتها المادية، أما انعكاساتها الحضارية كانت سياسية.
