لقد جاء هذا الكتاب في ثمانية وحدات، تناولت الوحدة الأولى منها بعضا من النماذج ثنائية الاستجابة للفقرة، كما تناولت الوحدة الثانية بعضا من النماذج متعددة الاستجابة للفقرة.
ولأهمية تدريج المقاييس والمعنى الذي يعطى لهذه العملية فقد جاء ت الوحدة الثالثة لتتعامل مع أنواع التدريجات، والى التدريجات المستخدمة في كلا النظريتين: النظرية الكلاسيكية والنظرية الحديثة والمعنى الذي يتضمنه كل نوع منها.
ونظرا لاعتماد نظرية الاستجابة للفقرة على نماذج رياضية تستخدم في عمليات التقدير لكل من المعالم التي تصف الفقرة والقدرات الكامنة التي تصف الأفراد لذلك جاءت الوحدتان الرابعة والخامسة لإعطاء المفاهيم الأساسية المستخدمة في عمليات التقدير، مع الأمثلة الموضحة لذلك.
وفي ضوء أهمية مطابقة البيانات للنموذج المعتمد في عمليات التحليل، فقد تناولت الوحدة السادسة مفهوم المطابقة ( المواءمة) بشيء من التفصيل، كما تعرضت هذه الوحدة إلى الافتراضات التي تبنى عليها النماذج المعتمدة.
ونظرا لحاجة القارئ الى أداة يستخدمها في عمليات التقدير فقد جاءت الوحدتان السابعة والثامنة لتعرض لغة آي سي أل (ICL) والتي هي مشتقة من: Item response theory Command Language من خلال الأوامر التي تتضمنها هذه اللغة والبيئة التي تعمل ضمنها والممثلة باللغتين: Tool Command Language(TCL), C++.
وحتى يستطيع القارئ بشكل أولى التعامل مع أوامر اللغة: ICL، فقد تناولت الوحدة الثامنة بعضا من البرامج التي قام المؤلف بوضعها على بيانات قام بتوليدها على كل من الاستجابات الثنائية والاستجابات المتعددة.
ويمكن للقارئ أن يستخدم هذه البرامج في عمليات التقدير من خلال أجراء التعديلات على هذه البرامج باستخدام برنامج النوتباد (notepad).
