يلقي هذا الكتاب الضوء على موضوع الجيش في المهدية في الفترة من العام 1881م الذي يمثل بداية الصدام العسكري بين المهدية والعثمانيون في السودان، وحتى عام 1899م الذي يؤرخ لنهاية آخر المواجهات العسكرية للمهدية، والذي تعرضت فيه المهدية للهزيمة على يد القوات البريطانية المصرية الغازية، فزالت على اثرها الدولة السودانية، وخضعت للإستعمار البريطاني تحت غطاء الحكم الثنائي.
كما تمثلت مشكلة البحث أو فرضيته في أن الجيش في الدولة المهدية قد تشكل وفقا لمواصفات عسكرية دقيقة وأصبح مؤسسة حديثة نسبيا قياسا بظروف تلك المرحلة ومعطياتها.
تنبع أهمية البحث من تناوله موضوع الجيش في المهدية من حيث التنظيم، والتمويل، والتصنيع الحربي، والتسليح، والعمل الأمني والإستخباراتي، بشكل خاص، حيث أن الدراسات السابقة اهتمت بالمعارك بشكل أساسي، مع إهمال الجيش وتنظيماته.
وقد اعتمدت هذه الدراسة على المنهج التاريخي، الوصفي، التحليلي، واستفادت من الوثائق المتعلقة بموضوع الجيش في المهدية، حيث استخدمت عددا وافرا منها، لإعادة قراءة تاريخ المهدية من مظانها الأصلية في موضوع مهم كالجيش.
