إن الحديث عن مؤتمر السقيفة تكتشفه صعوبات كثيرة , ذلك لأنه أخطر مؤتمر عالج فيه المسلمون المشكلة الأولى التي واجهتهم بعد انتقال النبي صلي الله عليه وسلم إلي الرفيق الأعلي , ناقش المجتمعون في السقيفة أمر الخلافة بعد النبي صلي الله عليه وسلم : لمن تكون ؟ أللمهاجرين باعتبارهم أهل النبي صلي الله عليه وسلم وعشيرته وأول الناس إسلاماً , فهم أحق الناس بها , أو للأنصار باعتبارهم أهل النصرة والإيواء والنضال الطويل في سبيل الدعوة الإسلامية؟ وكان علي مقدار نجاحهم في حسم الموضوع الذي بحثوه في السقيفة , وهو موضوع الخلافة , يتوقف نجاحهم في مستقبل حياتهم وفي بناء دولتهم. وفي ظلال المناقشة عرضت وجهتا نظر الأنصار والمهاجرين على بساط البحث الهادىء الوقور , وتبودلت الآراء في جو يليق بأصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم , وأخيرًا استقروا على تولية الصديق رضي الله عنه ليكون أول خليفة بعد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم , وكان ذلك توفيقًا من الله , فما أظن المسلمين وقفوا بعد نبيهم صلى الله عليه وسلم في الوصول إلى قرار هو أفضل وأحكم من قرار تولية الصديق ... وهذا ما سيوضحه كتابنا هذا.
