الكتابة متعة وليست مجرد عملية عرض لآراء وأفكار، ويرى البعض أن كتابة المقال هي تجربة أصعب من تجربة الكتابة في الفنون الصحفية الأخرى التي تعتمد بدرجة أكبر على المعلومات التي يتم تجميعها والوصول إليها من مصادرها المختلفة.
ويهدف المقال إلى: تفسير وتقييم وإصدار الأحكام والتنبؤات والإشارة إلى نتائج الظواهر أو الأحداث التي يعالجها، وذلك من خلال إحضار وإبراز البراهين (التجريبية) الموضوعية التي لها أن تؤكد إفتراضاته الأساسية (إفتراضات الكاتب) وتجعل القارئ أكثر يقيناً بسلامتها.
ومثل أي ممارسة منهجية، لا بد أن تمر عملية كتابة المقال بعدد من الخطوات، إتباع هذه الخطوات، يساعد الكاتب على الكتابة بطريقة إحترافية، من شأنها أن تقدم أنموذجاً يحتذى في ممارسة الكتابة المقالية الصحيحة، كما أن الإلتزام بهذه الخطوات، التي هي بذاتها معايير مهنية لكتابة المقال بشكل عام، والمقال الصحفي بشكل خاص، يحقق الهدف من الكتابة، وهو: إثارة إنتباه القارئ، ودفعه لقراءة المقال، لأي أي كاتب مقال، إنما يهدف لإستقطاب أكبر عدد من القراء، لقراءة مقاله، وهي مهمة ليست سهلة.
