وقد اعتمد المؤلف لهذا الغرض روايات نجيب محفوظ، أولاد حارتنا إلى حكايات حارتنا مروراً بملحمة الحرافيش وليالي ألف ليلة ورحلة ابن فطومة وانتهاء بآخر رواياته، إلى جانب ذلك فقد اعتمد المؤلف حوارات ولقاءات نجيب محفوظ المختلفة بالإضافة إلى العديد من الكتب والمراجع التي تناولت أعماله. وقد انتحى منهجاً يجمع بين البعد التاريخي والتحليل النصي للروايات، وركز على التي تخدم هدف الكتاب.
