وقع الاختيار على دراسة الفكاهة في مقامات بديع الزمان الهمذاني لأسباب عدة لعل أهمها الرغبة الشخصية في هذا الموضوع فالإنسان في حاجة إلى ضحك يزيل عن كاهله هموم الحياة، ومتاعبها، ولا سيما في عصرنا المعقد هذا وللدفاع عن الأدب العربي، وإبراز صفحاته الباسمة.
أما ما يخص منهج الدراسة فقد سعى الباحث إلى الإفادة من المنهجين النفسي والإجتماعي، وقد قامت خطة البحث على تمهيد، وفصلين، عرض التمهيد لمعنى الفكاهة لغة واصطلاحاً، وتتبع ملامح الفكاهة، وجذورها في الأدب العربي القديم حتى عصر الهمذاني. أما الفصل الأول فقد دار في المبحث الأول على فكاهة الطباع التي تشيع في أغلب المقامات حيث صور الهمذاني طباعاً إنسانية مضحكة كالبخل، والتسول، والثرثرة، والغفلة والإنحراف الجنسى، والقذارة والكذب والسكر، والتغافل، والسرقة، والطمع والعته، في حين دار المبحث الثاني على الفكاهة اللفظية كالتكرار، والألغاز، والسخرية، والتخلص اللفظي الفكه، والشتائم والنظير في الرد، واللعب بالألفاظ.
وأما الفصل الثاني فقد تناول في المبحث الأول فكاهة المواقف كمصائب الغير والتناقض، والإنتظار الخائب، والقلب، وتناول المبحث الثاني فكاهة الأشكال، وفكاهة الحركات كالتقليد، والتنكر، والتشوه، ثم خاتمة لنتائج البحث.
