إن "جغرافيا الوهم" عبارة يختلف مدلولها باختلاف المنظور المعتمد، فمن منظور نقدي تشير هذه العبارة إلى كاتبها ومنظوره الثقافي وعصره وما يعتبر فيه واقعاً وصواباً وما لا يعتبر كذلك، ومن منظور تطوري تستدرجنا هذه العبارة بشكل يكاد يكون لا إرادياً نظراً إلى هيمنة المنظور التطوري على تدريبنا العقلي، إلى التفكير بتاريخ الجغرافيا أو بتاريخ الأماكن الوهمية، ومن منظور سيكولوجي نجد هذه العبارة تشبه سهماً ذا رأسين متعاكسي الاتجاه يشير كل منهما إلى واقع مباين للآخر، الواقع المعطى والواقع المدرك، ومعلوم أن بين الواقعين فرق وتخوم متحولة، ولما كان الإنسان مواطنا في هذين الواقعين فهو لم يزل، لأسباب شتى، يعيد رسم هذه الحدود، لذلك جاءت هذه الحدود وليدة احتمال وصارت خريطة الوهم مفيدة لفهم الإنسان، ذلك الحيوان الواهم، نصوص هذا الكتاب مختارة من الأدبيات الجغرافية، أي من مصادر كانت تتمتع بقبول اجتماعي واسع بقيمة علمية أكيدة في حدود معرفة ذلك العصر، مع ذلك فهي لا تكاد تنتمي إلى الجغرافيا بمعناها المعاصر، صحيح أن بعضاً منها قد عولج في سياق التاريخ لعلم الجغرافيا، كما أن نصوص منها مثل: "ارم ذات العماد"، "جبل قاف" "جزيرة النساء" "حائط العجوز" "مدينة النحاس" قد نشرت بتمامها أو أشير إليها ضمن سياقات متباينة الأغراض باعتبارها أسطورية تارة وخرافية طوراً، ولكن أحداً لم يلتفت إلى أن ثمة ما يجمعها في نسق واحد أعم، وهو كونها تصدر عن الوهم وليس عن الأسطورة بالضرورة... ولكن لئن كانت هذه النصوص تصدر عن الوهم فهذا لا يعني أنها تنتمي إليه بلا تقييد، إنها تمثل فئة من الأوهام تقع في حقل يحدده تقاطع دائرتين دائرة الجغرافيا ودائرة الوهم، منطقة التقاطع هذه هي بما تحتويه "كل" يشهد على تصوير وهمي للعالم، "وجغرافيا الوهم" هو العنوان الذي أطلقه على فرضية وجود هذا "المحل الهندسي" الذي يشتمل على بلاد ومواقع اعتبرتها الدراسات الآنف ذكرها أسطورية، فضلاً عن تلك التي لم يتطرق إليها أصلاً بسبب خروجها عن نطاق بحث هذه الدراسات.
