أرسل الله سبحانه وتعالى رسوله بالهدى وجعله إماماً للناس كافة، وقد بين الرسول الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم للناس ما نزال إليهم ببيان بلغ غاية من البلاغة والإيجاز والحكام. وللعلماء طرق ووسائل يهتدون بها إلى الأحاديث الصحيحة والأحاديث الموضوعة المفتراة قد حققوا في صدق الرواية وسلامة السند والمتن، حتى اطمأنوا تمام الطمأنينة إلى صدق ما اعتبروه صحيحاً. وأرسوا بذلك قواعد علم الحديث.
والدكتور محمد أديب صالح مؤلف هذا الكتاب يضع مؤلفه بين يدي الباحثين والدارسين وطلاب العلم وجعل موضوعه يدور حول أصول الحديث وعلومه وهو علم جليل بحث فه العلماء أحوال سند الحديث ومتنه وتوثقوا من كل راو من الرواة ومن سلامة روائية، وهو يعرض في صفحات هذا الكتاب لماهية علم أصول الحديث الذي هو "علم بقواعد وقوانين يعرف بها أحوال السند والمتن من حيث القبول والرد". كما يوضح أهمية هذا العلم وأغراضه، ونشأته وتدوينه، كما يبين معنى الحديث والسنة، مبيناً حجية السنة إذ قامت الأدلة القطعية على أنها بمعنى ما أثر عن رسول الله من قول أو فعل أو تقرير حجة في دين الله ومصدر من مصادر الشريعة كما عرض لمعنى الحديث القدسي وكتابة الحديث وتدوينه، والرواية والدراية وعلوم الحديث وأقسام الحديث حسب وصوله، وأنواع الحديث والحديث الحسن وما يتعلق به كما يسن متى تقبل رواية الراوي وقدم نبذة عن الجرح والتعديل.
