وضع كتاب "الفن وعلم التشريح" بالدرجة الأولى بهدف تهيئة مرجع سلس صالح للاستعمال من شأنه أن يقرب إلى فهم الفنان المعطيات التشريحية للجسم البشري بشكل بسيط ومفهوم.
ويمكن لعلم التشريح الصرف أن يكون كافياً لمدرسة علم التشريح أو للفنان الذي يستخدمه كمرجع-ولكنه وحده لا يخدم، في رأي المؤلف، تلميذ الفن.
وإضافة إلى رسم شكل العظام والعضلات وتسميتها ووصفها، حاول المؤلف أيضاً وصف وظائفها وتركيبها انطلاقاً من المبدأ المنطقي الخلاق الملازم لها. وقد قام في بعض أجزاء هذا الكتاب بعرض تركيب جسم الإنسان بصورة مبسطة، مستعيناً برسومات الأشكال الظاهرية التي تؤكد على السمات المميزة. وفيما يخص صور العضلات والعظام الملحقة بالكتاب فقد كان هدف المؤلف أن يقرب إلى فهم تلميذ الفن جمالية كل جزء من أجزاء الجسم، وتناسقها بعضها مع البعض الآخر، وحركتها ككل. يقول المؤلف: "وآمل أن أكون قد نجحت إلى حد ما في أن أصل ولعي الشخصي بالعرض الفني لجسم الإنسان إلى قرائي وأن أوقظ فيهم من خلال ذلك الرغبة في الإحاطة بهذا الموضوع. فالفن في الغرب يعكس تراثاً غنياً في عرض جسم الإنسان، ويبدو لي أن الفهم السليم لتشريحه أصبح اليوم ذا أهمية بالغة أكثر من أي وقت مضى. فالمعرفة الصحيحة بتشريح جسم الإنسان تعتبر مهمة للرسم التشكيلي تماماً كما هي مهمة للرسم التجريدي أو الرسم الواقعي في أدق تفاصيله".
