هذا الكتاب من أهم الكتب التي صدرت عن الروائي العالمي نجيب محفوظ بعد رحيله، وخاصة فيما يتعلق برواية (أولاد حارتنا) التي ملأت الدنيا، وما زالت تشغل الكتاب والنقاد، فهو يعالج موضوع النص الغائب في الرواية، ولم أعرف أحداً من النقاد تناول هذا الموضوع بالدراسة من قبل. إن قراءة المؤلف لرواية (أولاد حارتنا) من الوجهة التناصية كانت رائعة تصوراً ومنهجاً، فهي من حيث التصور كانت منفتحة على كثير من المفاهيم التي وظفت في موضوع النص الغائب، ولم يستغل منها غير ما لها علاقة بطبيعة التناص التي تستجيب لنداءات المادة المدروسة، أما من حيث المنهج فقد كشفت عن وعي منهجي كبير، وهذا يعود إلى ثقافة المؤلف الموسوعية التي تجمع بين الموروث والحديث، فالمؤلف -كما عرفه- قارئ عاشق، وكاتب عاشق أيضاً، ومن خلال هذا العشق يتجاوز ما يعرف بالتخصص الضيق إلى كثير من آفاق معرفية أخرى، وبسبب ما سبق فإن هذا الكتاب يعد، من وجهة نظري، إضافة جديدة إلى المكتبة العربية المعاصرة.
