بعد ما لفظت العدالة المعرفة سميث بدأ البحث في الأحوال المادية لحياة الناس وكيف كانوا يوفرون سبل معيشتهم. ورأى سميث أن آليات توزيع الثروة في المجتمع التجاري الجديد أكثر دقة منها إلى حد بعيد في اقتصاديات العبيد في العالم القديم أو الملكيات الآسيوية.
وقد أعد هذا الكتاب لينأى بسيرة عن ألغاز الاقتصاديين وعن تبسيط السياسيين ويضعها في نطاق رؤية العامة فهو لا يستخدم اللغة الاصطلاحية الفلسفية أو الاقتصادية. وجديد هذا الكتاب- إن وجد- يكمن في ثلاثة اتجاهات: أولًا: سيبين أن كتاب "نظرة المشاعر الأخلاقية" لا يحتوي على فلسفة وأدب جيدين فحسب بل على "علم اقتصاد" جيد بالمعنى الحديث الذي تفهم به تلك الكلمة، وثانيًا: سيعيد إلى سيرة سميث غلبة المشاعر على العقل، وثالثًا: سيبرهن على أن الذين ينصبون آدم سميث مرجعية أسطورية لأيديولوجياتهم- كروميولوس Romulus ذي الشخصية الغامضة- لا يسدون أية خدمة إلى أي شخص.
